The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords to not demand a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This arrives just after NSFAS gained experiences about some accommodation companies who demand NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment in order to get access to the accredited private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation companies of the compulsory conditions, as furnished by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Settlement involving the non-public accommodation companies and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS explained in a statement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states that the rent is going to be paid out regular monthly to your accommodation supplier (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf of the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS conditions and terms for personal accommodation suppliers’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not call for or permit the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or some other sorts of payment on the lessor, or almost every other person in connection with this agreement, together with payment of hire, although awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall haven't any recourse versus the lessee for any default inside the payment of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is nsfas university allowances defunded as a consequence of an incorrect decision by NSFAS, the coed won't be chargeable for payment of any arrear rent to the accommodation supplier, check here up until the day of being defunded."

NSFAS defined that wherever the NSFAS-funded student chooses to carry on occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding remaining defunded by NSFAS, the student are going to be accountable for payment of hire on the lessor through the date of currently being defunded.

"Where the student is defunded by NSFAS due nsfas allowances to a misrepresentation by the lessee/guardian at any stage, the student must immediately vacate the leased property; and will be liable for payment of all rent due to the accommodation read more provider.
